What You Should Know About...Component Insurance Policies

First of two parts.

PMI receives many questions about component insurance coverage. The first thing you should know is that the insurance is in effect continuously. PMI has secured and paid for 2008 insurance policies with terms through 31 January 2009. The policies are unchanged from 2007.

As soon as we receive the 2008 policy from our insurance broker, we will post it to the Component Leadership Online Community  under Policies > Component Insurance.  You can always find the policy online in this location.

Because component officers are so busy early in the year with charter renewal and component programs, PMI sends the insurance information and invoice in July of each year. You will be invoiced for 2008 component insurance in July 2008. We expect no increase this year in the US$200 cost. Any policies secured by your component should be sent to PMI for the component's records.

If your component is located outside of the United States, your PMI insurance coverage is in excess of your local primary, compulsory coverage. You should find out if there is a need for compulsory insurance in your area and if so, please obtain insurance coverage to meet this requirement.

The Insurance FAQ found on the Component Leadership Online Community answers many of the questions we receive about component insurance. For further assistance on this topic, please contact Anne Jenemann.

Next week’s issue of Friday FACTS will discuss the need for, and primary purpose of, the event insurance questionnaire.

Virtual Communities Project (VCP) Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)

What Issues Were Still Open as of 31 December?

There are several items that will continue to be reviewed and clarified before proceeding with the Transition Plan, Formation Plan and Pilot execution. These include:

  1. Community model names
  2. Ongoing budget and resources from PMI
  3. Dissolution process for existing SIGs and colleges
  4. Availability of final technology platform, which will be primarily Web
  5. Organizational structure, including the roles and responsibilities to administer the virtual communities

All of these items have been rolled into the second phase of the project. VCP Phase 2 will be addressed by a combination of staff and volunteer resources, and the final work package will be available by 30 March.

You can review the complete, updated VCP Frequently Asked Questions document on the Component Leadership Online Community.

PMI Component Annual Charter Renewal Due 29 February

It’s annual PMI component charter renewal time. All 281 chartered PMI components are required to submit their 2008 charter renewal to PMI Global Operations Center by Friday, 29 February. To date, 100 components have not yet started this important process. To avoid delay, do not wait until the last minute to begin the renewal process. Because the renewal deadline has been extended by an additional month, no further extensions to the deadline will be granted.

Officers with the proper permissions set in the Component System (CS) can access the charter renewal, as follows:

  1. Logon to PMI.org
  2. Once logged on, click on Get Involved in the top navigation bar
  3. From the menu bar on the left, click Components & Communities
  4. Component System/DEP will be the last selection under Components & Communities
  5. The 2008 Charter Renewal link is located on the first page of the Component System (CS) on the left hand side of the page

If you have questions, please call Anne Jenemann at +1-610-356-4600, ext. 5035, or e-mail to charterrenewals@pmi.org.

Is Your Component's Contact Information Correct on PMI.org?

Every PMI chapter, SIG and college has their primary contact information listed under the Get Involved section of the new PMI.org. Please confirm that your component’s information is correct. If changes are needed, please e-mail the updated contact information to Philomena Aiuto.

Find What You Need in the Component Officers’ Toolkit

To help you run your component organizations, PMI has significantly improved and modified the information and tools on the Component Leadership Online Community.

Throughout the Component Officers’ Toolkit are new files collected from the 2007 component award applications that will give you ideas and help you succeed in specific operational areas.

Have you explored the toolkit? Sections include:

  • Basic tools
  • Communications
  • Component mentor program
  • Component management
  • Finance
  • Marketing
  • Membership
  • Outreach
  • Performance Management Framework
  • Professional development and education
  • Strategic planning
  • Volunteer program

The toolkit is continuously improved and expanded as new resources are developed and made available.

PMI volunteer leaders are encouraged to engage in thoughtful and open discussions about the toolkit with their Boards and identify additional needs.

Please contribute your thoughts about the toolkit via e-mail to Anne Jenemann
